NovaSure™
Treatment Works Well for the Most Common GYN Problem;  Patient Drives Herself Home After Brief Procedure

For years, Eleanor Craig, an outdoorswoman, landscaper and former special education teacher, had suffered from severe dysfunctional uterine bleeding.   Her periods often lasted three out of four weeks, with painful, debilitating cramps.

Although for days on end she had to alter her routine to manage her problem, she didn’t really want to get hysterectomy.

As she became progressively more anemic and overwhelmed, fortunately she learned of the FDA-approved NovaSure™ endometrial ablation treatment, introduced in 2002.

Endometrial ablation is a clinical procedure that is performed to reduce and ideally eliminate excessive menstrual bleeding by destroying, or ablating, the endometrial lining of the uterus. The patented NovaSure System is a next generation device that uses precisely measured radio frequency energy delivered via a slender, hand-held catheter to remove the endometrial lining.

Thomas L. Lyons, M.D., of the Center for Women’s Care & Reproductive Surgery www.thomasllyons.com was the first in the Southeast to offer NovaSure as a solution to the age-old problem of excessive menstrual bleeding, or menorrhagia.  It is designed for pre-menopausal women who have completed their childbearing.

According to the National Women’s Health Resource Center, a non-profit offering information on women’s health, approximately one in five women suffer from this problem.  It accounts for approximately 30% of the estimated 600,000 hysterectomies performed in the U.S. annually.

Major Benefits to Women

The 90-second treatment is significantly shorter than any other endometrial ablation treatment. The average procedure lasts five minutes and is performed without general anesthesia, meaning the patient can quickly resume her daily activities.

An added benefit to women: no medications or other preparation of the uterine lining are necessary prior to the procedure.

Although menorrhagia is not life threatening, it disrupts the lives of one in five women due to iron-deficiency anemia, fatigue, embarrassing accidents and often severely restricted activity. Women suffering from menorrhagia commonly use more than 20 sanitary napkins or tampons in a single day.

"We're glad to continue offering a variety of choices to women who want less-invasive solutions," said Dr. Lyons. www.thomasllyons.com  "Conventional, or 'rollerball' endometrial ablation uses electro surgery and requires general anesthesia. It's difficult and complex, and not widely available because of that. We're always striving for a better way."

In his outstanding career as a laparoscopic GYN surgeon, Dr. Lyons travels around the world and trains other surgeons in the procedures he has developed: Laparoscopic Supracervical Hysterectomy (LSH) and the Laparoscopic Burch procedure for urinary stress incontinence.  Additionally he has developed many high tech instruments that are used in laparoscopic procedures.

Dr. Lyons is globally recognized as an innovator of minimally-invasive surgery.

“Each of the patients who experienced the NovaSure procedure here have returned to work or normal activity the next day,” said Dr. Lyons.   “Eleanor Craig was quite able to drive herself home afterwards.”

Scores of his patients search the web and determine that he is their best solution, coming to him from as far as Tokyo, Moscow and Buenos Aires.
